Blue Skies Over Brantôme

What a glorious day it has been! We had a lazy day at home yesterday, so made up for it today by being very productive. After brekkie, we jumped in the car and drove to Périgueux in search of some chests-of-drawers for our clothes, which are still for the time being scattered all over the bedroom floor. You have to time these excursions carefully: the whole country takes a lunch break from 12 – 2 (it’s the law, I think) – so everything shuts. Everything. With only about half an hour to go, we struck gold in a shop called Conforama – 2 Ikea-esque chests for a good price.

Today, we have been treated to the best weather so far by a country mile – not a drop of rain, and blue skies all day long! We decided to take advantage of this by swinging by Brantôme on our way home. It is such a jaw-droppingly beautiful town – every time I go, I get carried away with taking pictures (hence the new photo album). We ate lunch in the only place that was open* and had an exquisite meal, served by an exquisite waiter (I love France), then took a nice, leisurely stroll through the town, soaking it all in. C’est si belle!

I also decided that the grace period I had been allowing myself for settling in is now over, so the exercise routine begins! I did a gruelling 45 min work-out when we got home, then helped Matt with the assembly of the first chest of drawers. The instructions state that it should take 1.5 hours. This is nothing more than a dirty, stinking lie. Well, they will keep us occupied for a good while, I suppose…

*Before we went there, we saw a sign for a Pizzeria, which caught our eye – “ouvert tout l’annee” (open all year). We found it – and it was shut. We saw another fine example of this twisted logic in a park just outside of Angoulême. There, a totally fabulous sign informs visitors that the park is: “overt tous les jours – fermé le dimanche” (open every day – shut Sundays). Ummm….. quoi?!
