We did indeed get a dusting of snow last week, but just on one day and it all cleared up by the evening. We had a few cold nights too, which explains the range of nocturnal cat-related michief that has been disturbing our sleep lately. We’ve got a few more single-digit days to come and then it should warm up somewhat. And then it will rain. And rain.
It was a quiet week at Port 80, and Matt’s even close to running out of work. He’s sent out a number of quotes though so his respite is likely to be temporary. For me, I am working on a smallish website for a “faith healer” couple that I am not too enthusisastic about. I also got the go-ahead from the vineyard people I did a quote for last week (clearly should have charged more!) so I have a big project to keep me occupied. The client seems quite laid back, so hopefully it wont be too painful.
I don’t think there’s anything elso of note for our week, so on to the weekend. This kicked off with a big meal at ours on Friday. We invited Manu & Mathilde, Francoise, and Marie & Christian. Matt prepared a mexican-themed meal of enchiladas with guacamole and Francoise took care of the nibbles. After a generous aperitif course that got us all nicely oiled, we sat down to eat. Inevitably, the conversation turned to the “Gilets Jaunes” protests, and to Macron’s response to them. Marie & Christian’s hatred of him is paranoid bordering on deranged, and things got a little heated. While M&C’s views are the most extreme, everyone present bar Matt and myself would quite happily see the back of Macron. I must learn to just shut my mouth on such evenings.
A course of Matt’s brownies and plenty to smoke calmed things down afterwards. The guests didn’t tarry too long and we did our usual drunken watching/falling asleep in front of a film, then turned in for the night.
A lazy day of recovery followed, which Matt spent much of making a particular lasagne recipe that involves numerous types of mushroom and an obscene amount of cheese. It’s rich as anything but utterly delicious. That evening we were again playing host, but this time in English. We’d not seen Ridget since before Christmas so wanted to get caught up. They’re both good, feeling settled and are making slow progress at learning French. It was a far more chilled evening than the Friday (perhaps because of the Friday thinking about it), but it was lovely to see them again.
After the meal, we chatted for a bit about Brexit, Trump and the generally dire state of the world. They left us on the early side, so we had ourselves a cleanser and watched some TV before bed.
And that’s about all the news from here. In Olney town, my parents are still waiting for the van to sell and to find tenants for the house. January’s probably not an ideal time for either but hopefully it will happen soon – and then before you know it, they’ll be over here! Until next week, au revoir.
