Practice, Practice, Practice

I’m late with my entry, but there’s not much going on, so this will be brief. We’ve mainly been occupied with rehearsals for our upcoming gigs.

Last Wednesday, we had Sabine and Roxanne over to rehearse for the first time. We ran through most of the songs, and many of them were sounding all right. Will and I both have quite a few new songs to learn. Some are more challenging for him, and others for me but we still have two months before the gig at Jenny’s so we’re feeling comfortable. The ladies also have some work to do, mainly on the English songs where the lyrics are sung quickly. Jenny has finally confirmed the date will indeed be the 11th of June. We’re feeling mostly positive about this gig, unlike some of the others.

This brings us to Musique en Herbe, where things are not going quite as smoothly. On the positive side, Will has discovered why his guitar never sounds very good there, and has bought a couple of pedals to fix the issue. It’s not 100% perfect, but a big improvement. We had a rehearsal on Saturday afternoon, and it went ok. This is basically a reprise of some songs we did for the Milhac gig back in November. It’s going to be on 21 June for La Fete de la Musique at Gislaine’s restaurant. I mentioned that we were invited to play in St Front on 2nd July, and in theory, everyone was up for it. However, they weren’t willing to rehearse every Saturday, so in the end, I told the lady that we couldn’t play. With four other concerts and only a few rehearsals in April and May, we would be far from performance ready.

We also had our usual Friday rehearsal, which was so-so. We’re still mainly working on songs for the dance concert, where we’ve got to play the songs consistently. In fact, we’re recording them this Friday, so hopefully we can move on to new things after that. I’m feeling more than vindicated for cancelling the Milhac 70’s night gig that was scheduled for May. We’re still doing an event that night, but now it’s going to be a karaoke evening. Normally, you would be correct in thinking that it was my idea, but it was two women in the village who suggested it. With Will’s help, I’ve been searching for someone to come and DJ the event, and I think we’ve found someone. The only tricky part is that Barry, Carol and Carol have been rehearsing songs to sing at the 70’s dance night, and they aren’t keen on a karaoke evening. This is despite the fact that essentially, they’re singing karaoke without realising it.

We didn’t do any socialising last weekend, although Will and I had curry on Friday night. Lucien has finished tilling the veggie plot, and I mowed the lawn for the second time. It’s been mostly mild, but stormy so we’ve had many grey days and a bit of rain. I’ve got to make time for gardening, and it’s also time for Will to trim the hedges.

Apart from rehearsals, our time has been largely taken up by work. I’ve started a project for Abby which I could be working on full time for the next week or so. I’ve also got a few other bits and pieces on the go for other clients. It went quiet for Will for a few days, but he’s got a number of new projects on the go, including a redesign for my uncle Bud’s site. He is a lithographer and has had the same site for nearly 15 years. It’s held up surprisingly well, but is in great need of a refresh. Will received three or four requests for new sites recently and he’s already got a number of sites that are waiting on the client, so it’s a busy time for him.

And on that note, I must get to work.
