The Perfect Cheese

Mmmmm – yummy! Just finished snacking on a little bit of the tastiest cheese in the whole wide world. Yes, it’s true: while the quest for the perfect red wine is still very much underway, all contenders for the accolade of ‘best cheese ever’ can now give up and go home – we have a winner! This cheese has already been mentioned in an earlier post, but we are so blown away by it that we thought it deserved an entry all of its own. We discovered this spectacular cheese when eating out at a posh and expensive restaurant in Brantôme and were compelled to ask the waitress what is was. It is called Trappe d’Echourgnac and is made locally…. by nuns!

As much as that puts me off in theory, I am a true convert (to the cheese, not the faith). Apparently, intolerance, self-delusionment, sexual frustration, prejudice and general meanness is the perfect temperament for cheesemaking. Who knew?

Out at the supermarket the other week, Matt chanced upon a display of Trappe d’Echourgnac and immediately purchased some. At €6 for a mere 300g, it is by far the most expensive cheese we have sampled out here, but in this case, you really do get what you pay for. It is made using walnut oil (and lots of it, by the taste) and the combination of the rich, creamy cheese and the strong flavour of walnuts is a truly perfect marriage. Brides of Christ? I say brides of fromage! Go, sisters! (But don’t expect me at church on Sunday).
